So, this movie isn't recent, it was out in 2002 - but I just saw it.
Jeremy Irons is the main character who decides to build a time machine to
stop his fiancee from getting murdered just after they get engaged.
After returning to the past he realizes he can't change it- but if he can take a glimpse into the future maybe he can get some answers.

Cut to a bunch of cool shit, yadda yadda.

So, basically he gets stuck in the waaaaaaaaaaay future. (Like after another Ice Age, its so far into time)and his machine gets destroyed and he has to learn to cope with in a life that was never meant to be his.

Pretty crazy.

However a great quote arises from the movie.

"We all have our time machines, don't we. The ones that take us back to the past
are our memories, the ones that carry us into the future, are our dreams."
